Refried Beans Without the Refry

This is a staple in my household. You will almost always find frozen refried beans in my freezer.

slow cooker required


1 onion, peeled and halved

3 cups dry pinto beans, rinsed

1/2 fresh jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped

2 tbsp minced garlic

3 tsp salt

2 tsp ground black pepper

1/2 tsp cumin

9 cups water


1. Place onion, rinsed beans, jalapeno, garlic, salt and pepper and cumin into slow cooker. Pour water on top, cook on high for 8 hours, add water as needed

2 Once beans have cooked, strain them and reserve the liquid. mash the beans with a potato masher, add reserved water as needed to desired consistency.
